God's Mercy Knows No Bounds
«And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said he would do unto them; and he did it not.»
«I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance.»
Let these verses remind you to take your own Bible in your hands, read them there again and, if you wish, continue a little further. Holding God's Word in your hands also gives you a precious moment away from the digital world.
Do not read the Bible in one long run, but passage by passage: one text, unhurried, asking the Holy Spirit for understanding. Whoever tries to swallow everything at once loses the overview. Whoever takes one passage each day will see the whole picture over time.
The connection
In the Old Testament, we see God withdrawing His threatened judgment when the people of Nineveh turn back to Him. Christ reveals this mercy in its full measure, showing that God's joy over the repentance of a single individual is immeasurable. The grace that Nineveh experienced becomes, in Jesus, a universal invitation to everyone who turns to God.
Reflection
Yesterday, we saw how God's patience transcends our judgments. Today, we recognise how this patience flows into profound mercy as soon as we turn to Him. The story of Jonah and Nineveh is a powerful testimony that God does not wait for our failure to punish, but for our repentance to forgive. He is always ready to change His plans when our hearts open to Him.
It's easy to judge others or to remain stuck in our own mistakes. Yet, the message is clear: God's heart beats for repentance. He rejoices over every step we take away from evil and towards Him. This joy is so great that it overshadows everything else, as Jesus so vividly describes with the lost sheep or the prodigal son.
Let yourself be encouraged today by this boundless mercy. No matter where you stand, what mistakes you've made, or what fears plague you – the door to repentance and forgiveness is always open. God waits not with a raised finger, but with open arms. He longs to meet you and to rejoice over you.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I thank You for Your unending mercy. It's so easy to get caught up in my own judgments or fears. Help me today to recognise Your great heart for repentance, not only in others but also in myself. Grant me the openness to see every step towards You as a reason for joy. Let me feel Your love, which extends beyond all my failings and rejoices in every new beginning. Amen.
