Renouncing Retaliation, Love Instead of Law

Christ Comes · The Sermon on the Mount
Old Testament
Exodus 21:23-25
«But if any harm follow, then thou shalt give life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burning for burning, wound for wound, stripe for stripe.»
New Testament
Matthew 5:38-42
«Ye have heard that it hath been said, 'An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.' But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also. And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain. Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.»

Promise and fulfilment

Foretold

In the Old Testament, a clear boundary was set for uncontrolled vengeance, to prevent a spiral of violence and to ensure justice based on the principle of equivalence.

Fulfilled

In Christ, this limitation of vengeance is not only fulfilled but transformed into a higher form of love and renunciation, where evil is no longer repaid in kind, but met with goodness, thereby completely breaking the cycle of violence.

Let these verses remind you to take your own Bible in your hands, read them there again and, if you wish, continue a little further. Holding God's Word in your hands also gives you a precious moment away from the digital world.

Do not read the Bible in one long run, but passage by passage: one text, unhurried, asking the Holy Spirit for understanding. Whoever tries to swallow everything at once loses the overview. Whoever takes one passage each day will see the whole picture over time.

The connection

The Old Testament set a just limit to the desire for revenge by demanding equal retaliation. Christ goes far beyond this: He calls not merely for a limitation, but for a radical reversal, meeting evil with love and completely renouncing retaliation. He dissolves the law of equal retribution into the law of boundless love.

Reflection

Yesterday, we spoke about absolute truthfulness, which makes our 'yes' a 'yes' and our 'no' a 'no'. Today, Jesus takes us a step further, challenging us to rethink our understanding of justice. The old law of 'an eye for an eye' was revolutionary, for it prevented one eye from being followed by two. It set a just limit to revenge and protected against escalation.

Yet Jesus reveals an even deeper truth. He invites us not merely to limit vengeance, but to renounce it entirely. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, offer them the other also. This is not a call to subservience, but a radical act of freedom and love. It is a refusal to be drawn into the cycle of evil, and a courageous decision to break that cycle.

This renunciation of retaliation is the ultimate form of love, disarming evil and paving the way for reconciliation. It is an attitude that springs not from weakness, but from the power of God's Spirit. It is an invitation not just to keep the law outwardly, but inwardly, from a transformed heart, to reflect the love of Christ and thus make the Kingdom of Heaven visible in this world.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, I thank You for Your unending love, which constantly challenges us to grow beyond ourselves. I find it difficult to renounce retaliation and to meet evil with love. Often, the desire for justice grips me when I suffer wrong. Help me to carry Your Word in my heart, which teaches me not to repay evil with evil. Grant me the strength and courage to turn the other cheek, not out of weakness, but from the strength of Your love. May my heart today be a mirror of Your grace, answering hatred with kindness and injustice with forgiveness. Amen.

The thread

Having spent the week considering the Sermon on the Mount and Jesus' deeper interpretation of the Law, today's reflection on the radical demand to renounce retaliation follows on from yesterday's theme of truthfulness. Next week, we will turn our attention to God's miracles and mercy.

Live today in the power of love, which resists evil by refusing to repay in kind.
