Sharing the Message of Deliverance

Christ is Coming · Miracles and Mercy
Old Testament
2 Kings 5:17-19
«Then Naaman said, 'If not, yet, I pray thee, let there be given to thy servant two mules' burden of earth; for thy servant will henceforth offer neither burnt offering nor sacrifice unto other gods, but unto the LORD. In this thing the LORD pardon thy servant, that when my master goeth into the house of Rimmon to worship there, and he leaneth on my hand, and I bow myself in the house of Rimmon; when I bow down myself in the house of Rimmon, the LORD pardon thy servant in this thing.' And Elisha said unto him, 'Go in peace.'»
New Testament
Mark 5:18-20
«And when he was come into the ship, he that had been possessed with the devil prayed him that he might be with him. Howbeit Jesus suffered him not, but saith unto him, 'Go home to thy friends, and tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee, and hath had compassion on thee.' And he departed, and began to publish in Decapolis how great things Jesus had done for him: and all men did marvel.»

Promise and fulfilment

Foretold

In the Old Testament, it is foreshadowed that people who experience God's intervention will become a testimony to Him and turn away from other gods. Naaman vows to serve only the LORD and to bear witness to his experience.

Fulfilled

In Jesus Christ, this promise is fulfilled and deepened. The healed person becomes not merely a passive witness, but an active herald of God's mercy. He is not only to change his life, but to publicly proclaim Jesus' deeds, thereby spreading the message of love.

Let these verses remind you to take your own Bible in your hands, read them there again and, if you wish, continue a little further. Holding God's Word in your hands also gives you a precious moment away from the digital world.

Do not read the Bible in one long run, but passage by passage: one text, unhurried, asking the Holy Spirit for understanding. Whoever tries to swallow everything at once loses the overview. Whoever takes one passage each day will see the whole picture over time.

The connection

Naaman is healed by God's intervention and recognises that the LORD alone is the true God. He feels compelled to live out this testimony, even in difficult circumstances. Christ goes a step further here: He explicitly sends the healed man out to actively proclaim the good news of God's mercy, thereby carrying God's love into the world.

Reflection

Yesterday, we saw how the burdens of the past are freed through Christ. Today, we consider what happens with this newfound freedom. Naaman, the Syrian, experiences God's healing and recognises the uniqueness of the LORD. He is so deeply impressed that he no longer wishes to worship other gods and even takes earth from Israel to offer sacrifices on holy ground. His plea for forgiveness for the forced worship of Rimmon reveals his inner conflict and his desire to remain faithful to God, even when circumstances are challenging.

In the New Testament, we see how Jesus does not keep the healed man with Him, but deliberately sends him home. He is not merely to live a new life passively, but to actively become a messenger. He is to tell of the great things the Lord has done for him and how He has had compassion on him. This instruction shows that the experience of God's grace is not just for ourselves, but is meant to be shared.

Today, you too are invited to be a witness to God's goodness. Perhaps not with grand words, but in your daily life, in your encounters. Your story, your experience of God's mercy, can be a beacon of hope for others. Let yourself be inspired by this movement: from healing to mission, from receiving to giving. Go in peace and tell what God has done for you.

Prayer

Dear God, I thank You for Your mercy, which I am privileged to experience again and again in my life. You are the One who heals and sets free. Help me today not only to quietly enjoy what You give me, but also to be a witness to Your goodness. Grant me the courage and the right words to tell others of the great things You have done for me. Let my life be a praise to You, even when circumstances are sometimes difficult. Amen.

The thread

We are in the 'Christ is Coming' phase, and this week's theme is 'Miracles and Mercy'. Yesterday focused on freedom from burdens, today on sharing that freedom. Next week, we will look at the parable of the prodigal son.

Go forth today in peace and tell what great things the Lord has done for you.
