God's Heart Burns for You
«How shall I give thee up, Ephraim? How shall I deliver thee, Israel? My heart is turned within me, my compassions are kindled together.»
«And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.»
Promise and fulfilment
It was announced in the Old Testament that God's heart burns with compassion for His unfaithful people, and He refuses to finally give them up, because His love is stronger than any sin.
Precisely this unwavering, burning love of God arrived in Christ, as the Father in the parable ran to meet the prodigal son, embraced and kissed him even before the son could utter a word of repentance – a picture of the unconditional grace we encounter in Jesus Christ.
Let these verses remind you to take your own Bible in your hands, read them there again and, if you wish, continue a little further. Holding God's Word in your hands also gives you a precious moment away from the digital world.
Do not read the Bible in one long run, but passage by passage: one text, unhurried, asking the Holy Spirit for understanding. Whoever tries to swallow everything at once loses the overview. Whoever takes one passage each day will see the whole picture over time.
The connection
The Old Testament reveals God's deep, burning heart for His people, an inner movement of mercy that makes Him hesitate to abandon them. In the New Testament, this divine passion becomes visible and tangible in Christ, where the Father runs to meet the lost son and embraces him with boundless love.
Reflection
Yesterday, we saw the father running to meet his returning son. Today, we delve deeper into the heart of this Father, a heart that burns so intensely for you. Hosea describes God's inner struggle, how His compassion becomes so 'kindled' that He cannot let His people go. This burning heart is not a human weakness, but the deepest truth about God: He is love. He cannot give you up, even when you turn away from Him.
And it is precisely this love that is perfectly revealed in Jesus Christ. The father in the parable of the prodigal son does not hesitate, he does not settle accounts, he does not wait for an apology. He runs. He overcomes every distance, every shame, every hurt the son has caused. His love is so great that it overshadows everything else. This running is an expression of God's burning heart, which cannot help but draw you back, embrace you, and restore you.
Let this truth sink deep into your heart today. It is not just a story; it is a reality for you. Your heavenly Father has a heart that burns for you. He longs for you, He runs to meet you, no matter where you have been or what you have done. Receive this love that overcomes all things and accepts you completely. It is your safe harbour, your home.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I thank You for Your burning heart. It is unfathomable that Your compassion becomes so kindled that You cannot give me up. I marvel at Your love, which holds me fast, even when I have gone astray. Thank You for running to meet me, just as the father did in the parable. Help me to truly embrace this unconditional love today and to feel secure in Your embrace. May my heart be filled with Your love today, so that I may also share it with others. Amen.
