The Door Stands Open for You Too

Christ Is Coming · The Prodigal Son
Old Testament
Hosea 12:6
«Therefore return to your God: keep mercy and justice, and wait continually on your God.»
New Testament
Luke 15:31–32
«And he said to him, Son, you are ever with me, and all that I have is yours. It was right that we should make merry and be glad; for this your brother was dead, and is alive again; and was lost, and is found.»

Promise and fulfilment

Foretold

God proclaimed through Hosea that true repentance means holding fast to justice and mercy, resting solely upon his unfailing compassion rather than our own achievements.

Fulfilled

In Christ, the Father tenderly pursues the embittered older son, reassuring him of unbroken fellowship and offering grace that far surpasses any human claim to merit.

Let these verses remind you to take your own Bible in your hands, read them there again and, if you wish, continue a little further. Holding God's Word in your hands also gives you a precious moment away from the digital world.

Do not read the Bible in one long run, but passage by passage: one text, unhurried, asking the Holy Spirit for understanding. Whoever tries to swallow everything at once loses the overview. Whoever takes one passage each day will see the whole picture over time.

The connection

In the Old Testament, the prophet summons a self-righteous people to look away from their own merits and turn back to God’s merciful loving-kindness. In Jesus, that very Father steps outside the house to plead with his angry, dutiful son: God’s goodness disarms envy and invites us to share in his joy.

Reflection

Yesterday, you heard the music and dancing echoing from the father’s house. Yet today, someone remains outside. The older brother refuses to go in. He has always done his duty, never transgressed a single command, and now feels cheated because the reckless wanderer is being celebrated. His bitterness is so very human—and yet it closes his heart to the feast.

Remarkable is what the father does: he does not scold him from afar. He walks out into the dark to meet him. Just as he once ran to embrace the younger son, so now he pleads with the elder. His words are disarmingly tender: ‘Son, you are ever with me, and all that I have is yours.’ The father takes nothing from him; he merely longs to open his eyes to the wealth that has been his all along.

Perhaps you, too, sense a quiet resentment today: towards those who seem to be forgiven everything, while you strive faithfully on. The Father invites you to let go of that grievance. God’s mercy does not diminish your inheritance. Step inside, take your place at the table, and rejoice that the lost have come home.

Prayer

Father, you know the jealousy in my heart when others receive grace they seem not to deserve. Forgive me whenever I linger outside like the elder brother, counting up my own faithfulness. Thank you that you come out to meet me as well, stepping up to my closed door and calling me back to your heart. All that is yours you give me in Christ. Take away my bitterness, and grant me the freedom to rejoice with all my heart. Amen.

The thread

Yesterday the older son heard the feast, and today the Father pleads with him to share in the joy—tomorrow this mercy reaches its crowning height, before next week follows Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem.

Do not remain outside in resentment: the Father invites you in to his boundless joy.
