Wisdom from Above

Wisdom and Longing · Proverbs: Daily Life with God
Old Testament
Proverbs 3:7-8
«Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil. It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones.»
New Testament
James 3:17
«But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.»

The connection

The Old Testament urges humility and the fear of God as a path to physical and spiritual well-being. Christ expands upon this by revealing, through the Holy Spirit, a wisdom that not only benefits the individual but also shapes the community and is evident in its fruits. Thus, personal reverence for God becomes the foundation for a loving way of life.

Reflection

Yesterday, we saw that true wisdom is rooted in trust in God. Today, we deepen this thought: wisdom is not about accumulating knowledge that elevates us above others. Proverbs warns us against being wise in our own eyes. Genuine wisdom begins with reverence for the Lord, with the knowledge that God is the source of all good. It is an inner attitude that turns us away from evil and leads us to a healthy, fulfilled life.

James shows us the fruits of this divine wisdom. It is pure, not driven by selfish motives. It fosters peace, is gentle, and full of mercy. This wisdom is not theoretical; rather, it expresses itself in our actions, in how we treat others. It is impartial and honest, free from hypocrisy. It is a wisdom that Jesus Christ himself exemplified and that becomes accessible to us through the Holy Spirit.

Let us consider this morning: Where can I make this wisdom from above visible in my daily life? How can I allow myself to be led less by myself and more by God's Spirit? It is about not only making clever decisions but living a life that reflects God's love and becomes a blessing to others.

Prayer

Lord, my God, I thank you for the wisdom that does not come from myself, but from you. Help me, this morning and throughout the day, not to rely on my own cleverness. I ask that your Spirit guide me, so that I may act purely, peaceably, and mercifully. Show me where I can be a blessing today, where I can reflect your love in word and deed. May my decisions and my interactions with others make your good wisdom visible. Amen.

The thread

Having considered the foundations of the fear of God as the beginning of wisdom, today we see how this wisdom manifests in specific virtues. Tomorrow, we will turn our attention to the theme of language and its power, also a central aspect of wisdom.

Live today the wisdom that comes from above: pure, peaceable, merciful.
