Wisdom in the Heart, Life in Abundance

Wisdom and Longing · Proverbs: Daily Life with God
Old Testament
Proverbs 3:13-16
«Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding. For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold. She is more precious than rubies: and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her. Length of days is in her right hand; and in her left hand riches and honour.»
New Testament
John 10:10b
«I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.»

The connection

The Old Testament extols wisdom as a fount of riches, honour, and long life – a divine gift that brings blessings to humanity. Christ surpasses this promise, offering not merely earthly blessings, but life itself in its fullness, a life that extends beyond the confines of this world through Him.

Reflection

Yesterday, we saw how wisdom builds our lives upon a firm foundation, while folly tears everything down. Today, we turn our gaze to the immeasurable value of this wisdom. Proverbs describes it as something more precious than silver, gold, or rubies. It promises us a long life, riches, and honour – things we often ardently desire.

Yet, Jesus goes a step further. He doesn't just say that He gives us wisdom which leads to these blessings; He Himself is the very source of life. He promises us not merely a long life, but life in abundance, a life that gains an entirely new dimension through Him. This abundant life is not tied to material possessions, but to a deep, fulfilling relationship with Him.

What does it mean for you to receive this abundant life today? It means not allowing yourself to be led by the pursuit of fleeting things, but placing your hope in that which endures. It means discovering the fullness God bestows upon you in the small moments of everyday life, and letting your decisions be guided by the wisdom that comes from Him. Trust that He not only provides what is necessary but holds the very best in store for you.

Prayer

Dear Father, I thank You for the wisdom You bestow upon me, and for the promise of life in abundance. Often, I chase after things that are fleeting, overlooking the true riches You offer me in Christ. Help me today to recognise Your wisdom and to follow it. Teach me to savour the abundant life that Jesus has brought me in every moment. May my heart be filled with gratitude and trust in Your goodness. Amen.

The thread

Having considered the edifying power of wisdom and its heavenly origin, today we see its inestimable value and the fullness it grants us in Christ. Tomorrow, we will contemplate the transience of earthly things and rediscover the true source of fullness.

Receive today the abundant life that Christ bestows upon you.
