Transience: The Teacher of True Value
«A time to seek, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.»
«Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.»
Let these verses remind you to take your own Bible in your hands, read them there again and, if you wish, continue a little further. Holding God's Word in your hands also gives you a precious moment away from the digital world.
Do not read the Bible in one long run, but passage by passage: one text, unhurried, asking the Holy Spirit for understanding. Whoever tries to swallow everything at once loses the overview. Whoever takes one passage each day will see the whole picture over time.
The connection
The Old Testament describes the cycles of life and the transience of all earthly things. Christ takes up this thought and shows us how we should deal with this transience. He directs our gaze from the fleeting treasures of this world to the eternal values found in Him and His kingdom.
Reflection
Yesterday, we saw that everything has its time – even its time to pass away. Today, we recognise that this transience is not merely a fact, but also a teacher. A time to seek and to lose, to keep and to cast away – these are the rhythms of our lives, constantly reminding us that nothing is permanent, except what we find in God.
The Preacher holds a mirror up to us: we often cling to things that may be meaningless tomorrow. We invest our energy in what can rust or be stolen. Yet, this realisation should not plunge us into resignation, but rather set us free. It invites us to reorder our priorities and to ask: What is truly valuable? What remains when all else fades?
Jesus puts it plainly: Store up treasures in heaven. This does not mean despising earthly things, but rather putting them into the right perspective. It means placing love, mercy, justice, and faith in God above all material possessions. For these are the true treasures that will fill your heart and that no one can take from you, neither today nor for eternity.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I thank You for this new day and for the wisdom You grant me through Your Word. I see how transient much in my life is, how quickly things come and go. Help me to fix my eyes on what truly matters. Turn my heart away from the treasures of this world, which can perish, towards You and Your eternal kingdom. Teach me to recognise what is valuable and to invest my love and my energy in what remains. Amen.

Having considered the cycles of life yesterday, the Preacher today leads us to the question of true value. Tomorrow, we will see how this insight leads us to a new attitude towards life.
