Work, Eat, and Rejoice in the Gift
«I know that there is no good in them, but for a man to rejoice, and to do good in his life. And also that every man should eat and drink, and enjoy the good of all his labour, it is the gift of God.»
«Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.»

The Preacher recognises joy in work and enjoyment as a gift from God to humanity in a fleeting world. Christ expands upon this idea by resolving our anxieties about material things. He teaches that our heavenly Father provides for all our needs if we first seek His kingdom. Thus, the joy of life becomes not merely a gift, but a consequence of trusting in God's provision.
Reflection
Yesterday, we saw how the fleeting nature of life teaches us to gather treasures that endure eternally. Today, we turn our gaze to the here and now, to what is given to us in this transient life. The Preacher encourages us to find joy in our work, to eat, to drink, and to enjoy the good things. He sees this as a gift from God – a small oasis of joy in the face of impermanence. It is an invitation not merely to endure life, but to consciously embrace it as a gift.
Yet, how often do we allow ourselves to be overwhelmed by worries about tomorrow? What shall we eat, what shall we drink, how shall we be clothed? These questions can rob us of the joy of today. Jesus reminds us that such worries trouble the Gentiles, those who do not know the loving Father. He promises us that our Father knows what we need, and that He will take care of it if we set our priorities straight.
It is not about becoming idle or living irresponsibly. It is about having the confidence that God provides for us as we dedicate ourselves to His kingdom. It liberates us to see the gift of life – the work, the meals, the small joys – as bestowed by God and to enjoy them with gratitude. In this way, we can find a deep, God-given joy amidst the fleetingness of all things.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I thank You for this new day and for all the gifts You bestow upon me. Help me today to find joy in my work and to savour my meals as Your gift. Free me from the worries about tomorrow that burden my soul. Let me trust that You know my needs and will provide for me as I strive to seek Your kingdom and Your righteousness. May my heart be filled with gratitude for what is, and with confidence for what is to come. Amen.
