Your Heart Knows the Way, Even in the Breath of Wind

Wisdom and Longing · Ecclesiastes: All is a Breath of Wind
Old Testament
Ecclesiastes 3:11
«He hath made every thing beautiful in his time: also he hath set the world in their heart, yet so that no man can find out the work that God maketh from the beginning to the end.»
New Testament
Matthew 6:21
«For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.»

The connection

The Old Testament speaks of God planting a longing for eternity in our hearts, a sense of something greater that transcends transience. Christ reveals that this longing does not lead to emptiness, but finds its true treasure and fulfilment in Him.

Reflection

Yesterday, we saw how God grants us both work and joy, and how He cares for us. Today, we look deeper into our inner selves: God has endowed us with a profound longing, a knowledge of eternity that allows us to look beyond the here and now. Amidst the 'breath of wind' of life, where everything seems fleeting, we nonetheless sense this inkling of something enduring.

This longing is no accident, but a divine gift. It drives us to seek meaning and purpose, something that does not pass away. Ecclesiastes 3:11 tells us that we cannot fathom God's work from beginning to end – and yet, eternity is set in our hearts. This is a paradox that invites us to trust God, even when we don't understand everything.

Matthew 6:21 connects this inner intuition with the treasure of our heart. If our treasure lies in Christ, then our heart is there too. This is the fulfilment of our longing for eternity. It's not about comprehending everything, but about binding our heart to what is truly eternal. This frees us from the slavery of the transient and gives us a peace that transcends all circumstances.

Prayer

Dear Father in heaven, I thank You that You have placed eternity in my heart, this deep longing for You. Sometimes I feel lost in the 'breath of wind' of life, where everything seems so fleeting. Yet You remind me that my heart holds a treasure that lasts forever. Help me today to consciously bind my heart to You, to that which truly matters. Let me feel Your presence and find rest in Your love, which surpasses all understanding. Amen.

The thread

After considering the transience of life and God's care in recent days, today we focus on the longing for eternity in our hearts. Tomorrow, we will see how this orientation frees us from worries.

Today, fix your heart on the treasure that lasts forever, and find your rest in it.
