God's Eternity Holds Our Transience
«I know that whatsoever God doeth, it shall be for ever: nothing can be put to it, nor anything taken from it: and God doeth it, that men should fear before him.»
«For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.»
Let these verses remind you to take your own Bible in your hands, read them there again and, if you wish, continue a little further. Holding God's Word in your hands also gives you a precious moment away from the digital world.
Do not read the Bible in one long run, but passage by passage: one text, unhurried, asking the Holy Spirit for understanding. Whoever tries to swallow everything at once loses the overview. Whoever takes one passage each day will see the whole picture over time.
The connection
What the Preacher perceives as God's eternal work, which might inspire awe, becomes in the New Testament, through Christ, an unshakeable promise of love. God's eternity is not merely a distant, untouchable principle, but the secure foundation upon which His love for us rests, a love from which nothing can separate us.
Reflection
Yesterday, we reflected on God's eternal judgment, which in Christ is a revelation of His love. Today, this thought expands: the Preacher sees that God's actions are eternal, unchangeable. This can inspire reverence, perhaps even a certain fear of the unalterable. It is the realisation that we are not at the centre, but God is.
Yet, precisely this eternity of God becomes, in Jesus Christ, the foundation of our greatest security. Paul writes that nothing, absolutely nothing, can separate us from the love of God. Neither the transience we have considered so intently this week, nor any power in heaven or on earth. God's eternity is not there to diminish us, but to anchor us in His love.
Today, you can live with the assurance that your life, with all its transience, is held secure in a love that is eternal. This love is not dependent on your achievements, nor on your failures, nor on circumstances. It simply is, because God is eternal, and His love is likewise. This brings a deep peace amidst all changes.
Prayer
Eternal God, I thank You for Your imperishable love. It is comforting to know that all You do endures forever, and that nothing can separate me from Your love, which You have revealed in Jesus Christ. Help me today to rest in this certainty, to release my fears, and to place my trust entirely in You. May Your eternity be my anchor in the transience of this day. Amen.
