God's Covenant and His Coming Messenger
«Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the LORD of hosts.»
«And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God. And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.»
Let these verses remind you to take your own Bible in your hands, read them there again and, if you wish, continue a little further. Holding God's Word in your hands also gives you a precious moment away from the digital world.
Do not read the Bible in one long run, but passage by passage: one text, unhurried, asking the Holy Spirit for understanding. Whoever tries to swallow everything at once loses the overview. Whoever takes one passage each day will see the whole picture over time.
The connection
In the Old Testament, God announces through Malachi a messenger who will prepare the way for the Lord – a longing for restoration and God's nearness. Luke shows us how this prophecy takes shape in John the Baptist. He is the messenger who, in the spirit and power of Elijah, prepares the people for the coming Messiah, thus renewing God's covenant.
Reflection
Yesterday, we reflected on God's boundless mercy, which is greater than our limitations. Today, our journey leads us into a time of stillness, into the four hundred years between the Old and New Testaments. Malachi, the last prophet of the Old Covenant, speaks of a messenger who will come to pave the way for the Lord. It is a promise that brings hope into a time of uncertainty, a deep longing for God's intervention.
This promise is fulfilled in John the Baptist. He is the foretold messenger, who, with the power of Elijah, prepares people's hearts for the Lord. Imagine how the people of that time must have waited for this sign. After centuries of silence, during which no prophetic voice was heard, a new era suddenly dawns. John calls for repentance, preparing the ground for the coming of Jesus, the light that breaks through the darkness.
What does this mean for you this morning? Perhaps there are also times of stillness, of waiting, in your life. Yet, history teaches us: God acts. He sends messengers, prepares ways, fulfils His promises. Trust that even in your quiet moments, God is at work, preparing you for what is to come. He prepares your heart so that you may recognise and receive His presence.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I thank You for Your faithfulness, which spans all ages. You sent messengers to prepare the way, and You Yourself came to redeem us. Help me to wait for You in the quiet moments of my life and to recognise Your guidance. Prepare my heart so that I am ready to receive You and to share Your love in my daily life. Let me be a messenger of Your goodness today, just as John was a messenger of Your coming. Amen.
