Experiencing God's Faithfulness in the Silence

Wisdom and Longing · Malachi and the Silence
Old Testament
Malachi 3:6-7
«For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed. From the days of your fathers ye are gone away from mine ordinances, and have not kept them. Return unto me, and I will return unto you, saith the LORD of hosts.»
New Testament
James 1:17-18
«Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.»

The connection

Malachi reminds the Israelites of God's unchanging faithfulness, even when they have strayed from Him. He invites them to return, precisely because He does not change. James confirms this divine constancy and expands upon it: God is the unchangeable giver of all good things, whose love in Christ brings about a new creation that can no longer be undone by human failure.

Reflection

Yesterday, we saw how God prepares the way for His coming. Today, we look at His unchanging faithfulness. Malachi speaks to a people who have distanced themselves from God. Yet, even in this distance, God's promise remains: He does not change. His love is not fickle, His promises not fleeting. This is an anchor in times of uncertainty.

The prophet calls for repentance because God is ready to turn back to them. Four hundred years later, in the apparent silence between the Testaments, this truth may have been forgotten. But then the New Testament dawns, and James confirms: with God, there is no change, no shadow of turning. He is the unshakeable rock, the source of all good, who makes us new creations through Christ.

This unchangeableness of God is not a rigid formula but the foundation of our hope. It means that His love, His grace, and His promises are just as valid today as they were then. Even if we feel distant from Him or the world around us is in flux, He remains the same. This gives you stability today and the assurance that you can turn to Him at any time.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, I thank You that You are unchangeable. In a world that is constantly shifting, Your faithfulness is my safe harbour. You are the same yesterday, today, and forever. Help me today to trust that Your good gifts come from You and that You have called me to new life through Your Word. Let me feel Your love and align myself with it, so that I may be a firstfruit of Your creation, honouring and serving You.

The thread

Having seen yesterday how God prepares the way, today we recognise His unchanging faithfulness. This truth carries us through the time of silence and prepares us for next week, when the Word becomes flesh.

God's faithfulness is your anchor. Trust that He does not change and that He loves you.
