God's Refining for a Pure Heart
«But who may abide the day of his coming? And who shall stand when he appeareth? For he is like a refiner's fire, and like fullers' soap: And he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver: and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the LORD an offering in righteousness.»

The connection
The Old Testament speaks of a refining fire that purifies the priests so they may serve God in righteousness. In the New Testament, we see John the Baptist, in the spirit of Elijah, preparing people's hearts. Christ himself is that fire, not to consume us, but to cleanse and enable us to live and serve in true love.
Reflection
Yesterday, we reflected on God's unwavering faithfulness. Today, we look at a consequence of that faithfulness: God desires to purify us. The image of a refiner or strong lye might initially make us uneasy. It speaks of a process that can be painful, separating the impure from the true. Yet, the goal is not destruction, but refinement.
John the Baptist prepared people for Jesus' coming by calling them to repentance and a reorientation of their hearts. He laid the groundwork for a people ready to receive the Lord. This preparation is not a one-off event, but an ongoing process in our lives. God wants to free us from everything that separates us from Him, that tarnishes our love, and hinders our service.
This morning, be encouraged by this promise: God is not intent on condemning us, but on refining us. He sees our potential and desires us to shine in His full purity and love. Trust that He is leading you through this refining process so that you may have a pure heart that meets Him in righteousness and love.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I thank You for Your faithfulness, evident yesterday and today. You are a God who not only loves but also purifies. I ask You, Father, to be the refiner in my life. Show me what in my heart is impure, what separates me from You or tarnishes my service. I long to be a vessel prepared for You, to have a pure heart that loves You and serves You in righteousness. Let Your Spirit guide and shape me, so I may be ready for all You have planned. Amen.
