The Day of the Lord is Coming
«For behold, the day cometh, that shall burn as an oven; and all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly, shall be stubble: and the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the LORD of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch. But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings.»
«And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways; to give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins, through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us, to give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.»

Do not read the Bible in one long run, but passage by passage: one text, unhurried, asking the Holy Spirit for understanding. Whoever tries to swallow everything at once loses the overview. Whoever takes one passage each day will see the whole picture over time.
The connection
Malachi announces the Day of the Lord, a day of purification and salvation for those who fear God. In the New Testament, John the Baptist is described as the forerunner of this day, preparing the way for the coming of Jesus, the Sun of Righteousness. Christ himself is the dawning light, who not only judges but, above all, brings salvation and peace.
Reflection
Yesterday, we considered God's call to repentance before this great day breaks. Today, we look at the day itself, as Malachi announces it: it will burn, purify, and separate. For the proud and the wicked, it is a day of judgment, yet for those who fear God's name, it will be like the rising sun, bringing healing and righteousness.
John the Baptist, whose birth we reflect on this week, is the forerunner of this day. He prepares the way for Jesus, who comes as the dawning light from on high. This light not only shines but also guides our feet into the way of peace. It is a promise that radiates across centuries of silence and still reaches us today.
It is a day that concludes the old and ushers in the new. The hope that Malachi sows in his final words is fulfilled in Christ. The light he brings is not merely a distant promise but a present reality. It dispels darkness and grants us forgiveness and a new beginning.
Prayer
Lord, my God, I thank you for the promise of the coming day, for the Sun of Righteousness that has risen in Jesus Christ. I pray that your light may shine in my life today, guide my feet into the way of peace, and forgive my sins. Help me to fear your name, not out of dread, but out of deep reverence and love. May I be a witness to your mercy today and carry your salvation into a world that still sits in darkness. Amen.
