Not by Bread Alone, but by God's Word
«And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD doth man live. Thy raiment waxed not old upon thee, neither did thy foot swell, these forty years.»
«And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.»
Promise and fulfilment
In the Old Testament, the people of Israel were promised that God would not only provide for them physically but also teach them that true life depends not on bread alone, but on His word and His guidance. He promised to point them towards a deeper, spiritual truth.
This promise was fulfilled in Christ when He resisted temptation in the wilderness. He proved that true fulfilment and true life lie in obedience and trust in every word of God, and not in the immediate gratification of physical needs. He lived out what God intended to teach His people Israel.
Let these verses remind you to take your own Bible in your hands, read them there again and, if you wish, continue a little further. Holding God's Word in your hands also gives you a precious moment away from the digital world.
Do not read the Bible in one long run, but passage by passage: one text, unhurried, asking the Holy Spirit for understanding. Whoever tries to swallow everything at once loses the overview. Whoever takes one passage each day will see the whole picture over time.
The connection
Israel's journey through the wilderness was a school of trust, where God taught His people that He is more than just a provider of bread. When Christ is tempted in the wilderness, He takes up this very idea, demonstrating that man's true nourishment lies in the Word of God, not in material gratification. He stands firm where Israel once faltered, showcasing perfect dependence on the Father.
Reflection
Yesterday, we saw that Christ fulfilled all righteousness, even by being baptised. Today, our path leads us into the wilderness, a place of testing. It is a place of scarcity, of hunger. And precisely where the most fundamental human needs are put to the test, it becomes clear what we truly build upon. What nourishes you when everything else falls away?
Israel was fed with manna for forty years in the wilderness, but they were also taught that there is more than just bread. God wanted them to learn to trust His word, His guidance, His love. He wanted to fill their hearts not only with food but with a deep certainty: I am your God, and I care for you, not just for your stomach, but for your entire being.
Christ takes up this lesson when He Himself hungers in the wilderness. The tempter offers Him a quick solution – to turn stones into bread. But Jesus refers to God's Word. He demonstrates that true strength and true life come from trusting in God, from every word that comes from His mouth. Whatever you encounter today, remember this: your true life comes from God, not from what you eat, have, or do.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I thank You for this morning and for Your living Word. I recognise that I often tend to rely only on what is visible and tangible. Help me today to understand and live by the truth that I do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from Your mouth. Strengthen my faith when I hunger – be it for food, for meaning, or for Your presence. Teach me to trust You completely, just as Jesus did. Amen.
