God's Discipline and His Loving Hand
«Know therefore in thine heart, that, as a man chasteneth his son, so the LORD thy God chasteneth thee. Therefore thou shalt keep the commandments of the LORD thy God, to walk in his ways, and to fear him.»
«And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.»
Promise and fulfilment
In the Old Testament, the people of Israel were promised that God would discipline them like a father, guiding them to obedience and trust in His word, even in times of hardship.
In Christ, the Son, this fatherly discipline reached its perfect fulfilment. In the wilderness, He fully trusted in God's word as His sole sustenance and resisted the temptation to self-sufficiency, thereby perfectly fulfilling the Father's will.
Let these verses remind you to take your own Bible in your hands, read them there again and, if you wish, continue a little further. Holding God's Word in your hands also gives you a precious moment away from the digital world.
Do not read the Bible in one long run, but passage by passage: one text, unhurried, asking the Holy Spirit for understanding. Whoever tries to swallow everything at once loses the overview. Whoever takes one passage each day will see the whole picture over time.
The connection
Israel was disciplined in the wilderness to learn that not bread alone, but God's word sustains. Christ, as the true Son, endures the wilderness, recalling this discipline and obeying the Father. He demonstrates that God's word is true nourishment and that the Father's discipline leads to obedience, where Israel failed.
Reflection
Yesterday, we considered how God's word nourishes us, not just physical bread. Today, we delve deeper: behind this is a fatherly discipline. God doesn't simply lead us through the wilderness to torment us, but to discipline us, to show us what truly matters. He wants us to recognise that our lives depend on His word, not on what we can conjure up ourselves.
This discipline is not always comfortable. It can push us to our limits, make us hungry, make us seek easy solutions. Precisely where Israel often failed in the wilderness, Jesus shows us the way. He endures the same temptation, the same emptiness, the same hardship. But He responds not with self-sufficiency, but with the Father's word. He models what it means to fully embrace God's discipline.
What does this mean for you today? Perhaps you face a challenge that makes you doubt, that makes you grasp for quick fixes. Remember that God is disciplining you. He wants to show you that He is your true source. Trust in His word, even when it becomes uncomfortable. It is the food that truly satisfies and keeps you in His ways.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for disciplining me as a father disciplines his child. It is not always easy, but I know You mean well for me. Help me today to walk in Your ways and to fear You, not out of dread, but out of deep respect and love. Let me recognise that my life depends on every word that comes from Your mouth, and grant me the strength to resist the temptations that seek to draw me away from You. I entrust my heart to You.
