God's Faithfulness in the Wilderness and Our Victory
«Who led thee through that great and terrible wilderness, wherein were fiery serpents, and scorpions, and drought, where there was no water; who brought thee forth water out of the rock of flint; Who fed thee in the wilderness with manna, which thy fathers knew not, that he might humble thee, and that he might prove thee, to do thee good at thy latter end; And thou say in thine heart, My power and the might of mine hand hath gotten me this wealth. But thou shalt remember the Lord thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day.»

Promise and fulfilment
In the Old Testament, God's covenant with His people was announced, promising them wealth and blessing, provided they did not forget God's guidance and provision, nor become arrogant.
This promise finds its true fulfilment in Christ. He resisted the temptation to glorify himself and seek his own power, remaining fully faithful to God in trust. Through this, he broke the power of evil and opened access to true, spiritual riches for all who believe in him.
Let these verses remind you to take your own Bible in your hands, read them there again and, if you wish, continue a little further. Holding God's Word in your hands also gives you a precious moment away from the digital world.
Do not read the Bible in one long run, but passage by passage: one text, unhurried, asking the Holy Spirit for understanding. Whoever tries to swallow everything at once loses the overview. Whoever takes one passage each day will see the whole picture over time.
The connection
Israel was led, provided for, and tested in the wilderness, yet they often forgot God's work and boasted in themselves. Christ also experienced the wilderness, but he resisted the temptation to seek his own power and remained faithful to God. Where Israel failed, Jesus triumphed.
Reflection
Yesterday, we spoke about the pride that tempts us to forget God and place ourselves on the throne. Today, we see how this pride repeatedly led to sin in Israel's wilderness journey. God miraculously provided for His people, giving them water from the rock and manna from heaven. Yet, instead of being grateful, Israel often boasted in its own strength and forgot the Giver of all blessings. It is a human tendency to claim success for oneself once the hardship has passed.
Jesus, however, took a different path. He too was led into the wilderness and tested to the extreme. But he resisted every temptation, whether it was to turn stones into bread, to test God, or to bow down to the devil for worldly power. He remained steadfast in his dependence on his Father and in the certainty that God's Word alone sustains. His victory in the wilderness is a pivotal turning point in salvation history.
His triumph over temptation is our victory. Where Israel fell, Christ stands firm. He shows us that true strength lies not in our own achievements or accumulated wealth, but in a deep connection with God and trust in His guidance. Today, you too may experience your own small 'wilderness moments' where you are tempted to rely on yourself. Remember Jesus and His faithfulness.
Prayer
Lord, my God, I thank You for Your unending faithfulness, which You showed to Your people Israel in the wilderness. You led them, provided for them, and disciplined them. I thank You even more for Jesus, Your Son, who resisted all temptations in the wilderness where we so often fail. Help me today not to become arrogant, but to recognise You as the Giver of all good things. Let me not forget that all strength and all wealth come from You. Strengthen me by Your Spirit, that I may remain steadfast in You and give You the glory that is due to You alone. Amen.

Having seen yesterday how Jesus resists pride, today we focus on his comprehensive victory in the wilderness, which overcomes Israel's shortcomings. Tomorrow, we will look at the authority with which Jesus now proclaims his kingdom.
