God's Covenant and the Light in Galilee
«And it shall be, if thou do at all forget the LORD thy God, and walk after other gods, and serve them, and worship them, I testify against you this day that ye shall surely perish. As the nations which the LORD destroyeth before your face, so shall ye perish; because ye would not be obedient unto the voice of the LORD your God.»
«And leaving Nazareth, he came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is upon the sea coast, in the borders of Zabulon and Nephthalim: That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, The land of Zabulon, and the land of Nephthalim, by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles; The people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up. From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.»
Promise and fulfilment
The Old Testament foretold that disobedience and forgetting God would lead to destruction. Simultaneously, Isaiah prophesied that a great light would dawn precisely in the darkest regions, such as Galilee.
This prophecy has come to pass in Christ: Jesus began His ministry and preaching of the kingdom of heaven precisely there, in Galilee, the 'Gentile' territory that sat in the shadow of death. He thereby fulfilled the prophecy and brought the promised light to the people living in darkness.
Let these verses remind you to take your own Bible in your hands, read them there again and, if you wish, continue a little further. Holding God's Word in your hands also gives you a precious moment away from the digital world.
Do not read the Bible in one long run, but passage by passage: one text, unhurried, asking the Holy Spirit for understanding. Whoever tries to swallow everything at once loses the overview. Whoever takes one passage each day will see the whole picture over time.
The connection
Yesterday, we saw that God grants us strength and ability when we remain faithful to Him. Today, the Old Testament sternly warns us against turning away from God, which leads to ruin. Yet, it is precisely into this world, plunged into darkness by disobedience and idolatry, that Jesus Christ steps. He brings the light that overcomes the consequences of falling away and opens a new path of repentance and the kingdom of heaven.
Reflection
The warnings in the Old Testament are clear: if you forget God, if you turn to other gods, there will be consequences. It is a serious reminder of how vital it is to keep our focus on the one true God and to obey Him. Israel often disregarded these warnings and fell.
Yet, into this very history of failure and darkness, a new chapter breaks forth. Jesus does not come to the strongholds of piety, but to 'Gentile Galilee,' a region considered dark and remote. There, where people sat in the shadow of death, a great light dawns. This is the unfathomable grace of God: He comes to where the need is greatest.
This light is Jesus Himself. His message is clear: 'Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.' It is an invitation to turn around, to reorient oneself towards God. He offers a way out of the darkness and the consequences of falling away. For us today, this means: we do not have to remain in darkness, for the light has come and invites us to draw near to Him.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I thank You for Your clear word, which warns me and at the same time fills me with hope. I recognise the serious truth that forgetting Your commandments and turning away from You leads to ruin. Yet, I praise You that in Jesus Christ, You sent a great light into the darkness. Help me today to carry this light in my heart, to repent where necessary, and to follow the call of Your kingdom. May my life be a testimony to Your grace. Amen.
