The Golden Rule: Heart of the Law

Christ comes · The Sermon on the Mount
Old Testament
Exodus 20:18-20
«And all the people saw the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the noise of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking: and when the people saw it, they removed, and stood afar off. And they said unto Moses, Speak thou with us, and we will hear: but let not God speak with us, lest we die. And Moses said unto the people, Fear not: for God is come to prove you, and that his fear may be before your faces, that ye sin not.»
New Testament
Matthew 7:12
«Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.»

Promise and fulfilment

Foretold

In the Old Testament, the Law was given to the people of Israel to reveal God's holiness and His will for righteous community living. It was a comprehensive guide intended to order life within the community.

Fulfilled

In Christ, this comprehensive Law has been distilled to a single, clear point: the Golden Rule. It is the fulfilment of the Law and the Prophets because it reveals love as the driving force behind all commandments, thus showing us the path to a life pleasing to God.

Let these verses remind you to take your own Bible in your hands, read them there again and, if you wish, continue a little further. Holding God's Word in your hands also gives you a precious moment away from the digital world.

Do not read the Bible in one long run, but passage by passage: one text, unhurried, asking the Holy Spirit for understanding. Whoever tries to swallow everything at once loses the overview. Whoever takes one passage each day will see the whole picture over time.

The connection

The encounter with God at Sinai was marked by awe and fear; the people sought distance. Jesus Christ not only brings God near to us but also reveals, at the heart of the Law, a simple, all-encompassing rule of love that enables us to live in God's presence.

Reflection

Yesterday, we reflected on anxiety about possessions and how trust in God frees us from it. Today, we see how Jesus distils the entire Law into one point: the Golden Rule. Imagine all the complex rules Moses gave to the people summarised in a single, simple sentence. Such is the radical nature of the love Jesus teaches.

At Sinai, the people experienced God's presence as something awe-inspiring, something that created distance. They asked Moses to speak for them, fearing they would otherwise die. The Ten Commandments were holy, yes, but also unattainable in their perfection. Jesus, however, teaches us that the heart of the Law lies not in fear, but in active love. It is not merely a prohibition, but an invitation to action.

The Golden Rule is not just a beautiful idea, but a principle for living. It challenges you to put yourself in another's shoes and to act from that empathy. It is the touchstone for all your doing and speaking. If you apply this rule in your encounters today, you will notice how it transforms relationships and creates peace – entirely in keeping with what God desires for us.

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father, I thank You for Your Word, which is so clear and yet so profound. I marvel at the wisdom of the Golden Rule, which encompasses the entire Law. Help me today to live not out of fear of commandments, but out of the love You bestow upon me. Let me treat my fellow human beings as I myself wish to be treated. May my heart be filled with this love, so that I may be a blessing to others and Your kingdom may become visible in my surroundings. Amen.

The thread

After considering the commandments of the Sermon on the Mount as a deepening of the Mosaic Law over the past few days, this thought culminates today in the Golden Rule. Tomorrow, we will turn our attention to the power of prayer, which enables us to live out this love.

Act today from the heart of the Golden Rule – for this is the Law and the Prophets.
