God Touches and Heals the Unclean

Christ Comes · Miracles and Mercy
Old Testament
2 Kings 5:1-3
«Now Naaman, captain of the host of the king of Syria, was a great man with his master, and honourable, because by him the LORD had given deliverance unto Syria: he was also a mighty man in valour, but he was a leper. And the Syrians had gone out by companies, and had brought away captive out of the land of Israel a little maid; and she waited on Naaman's wife. And she said unto her mistress, Would God my lord were with the prophet that is in Samaria! for he would recover him of his leprosy.»
New Testament
Mark 5:25-29
«And a certain woman, which had an issue of blood twelve years, and had suffered many things of many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse, when she had heard of Jesus, came in the press behind, and touched his garment. For she said, If I may touch but his clothes, I shall be whole. And straightway the fountain of her blood was dried up; and she felt in her body that she was healed of that plague.»

Promise and fulfilment

Foretold

In the Old Testament, the possibility of healing from sickness and uncleanness through God's intervention was announced, made visible through His prophets, and accessible even to foreigners.

Fulfilled

In Christ, this promise has been fully and completely realised. He Himself, as the Son of God, not only touches and heals foreigners and the powerful, but also the despised and the unclean who come to Him in faith.

Let these verses remind you to take your own Bible in your hands, read them there again and, if you wish, continue a little further. Holding God's Word in your hands also gives you a precious moment away from the digital world.

Do not read the Bible in one long run, but passage by passage: one text, unhurried, asking the Holy Spirit for understanding. Whoever tries to swallow everything at once loses the overview. Whoever takes one passage each day will see the whole picture over time.

The connection

In the Old Testament, God sends a prophet to heal a powerful but ailing man from a foreign nation. In the New Testament, it is Jesus Himself who is approachable and heals a sick woman, socially ostracised, who turns to Him in faith. Christ thereby transcends all boundaries of purity and status, reaching out to those on the margins.

Reflection

Yesterday, we reflected on the Golden Rule, which teaches us to treat others as we wish to be treated ourselves. Today, we see how God Himself lives this rule in perfection: He meets us not just with goodwill, but with a deep, healing love that transcends all human barriers. It is a love that is not deterred by illness, social status, or ritual impurity.

The stories of Naaman and the woman with the issue of blood show us that God's mercy knows no bounds. It is not just for the strong and healthy, but especially for those who suffer and stand on the margins. They teach us that we can turn to Him with our weaknesses and illnesses, our fears and worries. He is the God who touches where others withdraw, and who heals where people see no hope.

Let us begin this morning with the confidence that God sees us in all our imperfections and desires to meet us with His healing presence. No matter what we face today, we can know that His love and mercy are greater than any challenge. He is the same God who healed Naaman and the woman then, and He is here for you today.

Prayer

Dear Father in Heaven, I thank You for Your boundless love and mercy. You see my weaknesses and my needs, just as You saw Naaman and the woman with the issue of blood. I ask You to touch me today with Your healing power. Let me feel that You are with me and that Your love overcomes all my shortcomings. Help me to come to You in faith, just like the woman who touched Your garment. Amen.

The thread

After considering the Golden Rule as the heart of the law yesterday, today we deepen our weekly theme of 'Miracles and Mercy'. We see how God, through His prophets and then in Christ Himself, heals people who were considered unclean. This prepares us for the coming week, where the Father's unconditional love will be central.

God touches and heals the unclean – trust in His boundless mercy today.
