Obedience Heals, Faith Awakens to Life

Christ Comes · Miracles and Mercy
Old Testament
2 Kings 5:13-14
«And his servants came near, and spake unto him, and said, My father, if the prophet had bid thee do some great thing, wouldest thou not have done it? how much rather then, when he saith to thee, Wash, and be clean? Then went he down, and dipped himself seven times in Jordan, according to the saying of the man of God: and his flesh came again like unto the flesh of a little child, and he was clean.»
New Testament
Mark 5:35-39
«While he yet spake, there came from the ruler of the synagogue's house certain which said, Thy daughter is dead: why troublest thou the Master any further? As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, he saith unto the ruler of the synagogue, Be not afraid, only believe. And he suffered no man to follow him, save Peter, and James, and John the brother of James. And he cometh to the house of the ruler of the synagogue; and seeth the tumult, and them that wept and wailed greatly. And when he was come in, he saith unto them, Why make ye this ado, and weep? the damsel is not dead, but sleepeth.»

Promise and fulfilment

Foretold

The Old Testament foretold the possibility of physical cleansing and healing through obedience to God's instruction, even for a disease considered incurable, such as leprosy.

Fulfilled

This promise was surpassed in Christ: His word alone overcomes not only illness but even death, as He raises a dead person to life. He demonstrates that His work extends beyond any earthly healing, bestowing true life.

Let these verses remind you to take your own Bible in your hands, read them there again and, if you wish, continue a little further. Holding God's Word in your hands also gives you a precious moment away from the digital world.

Do not read the Bible in one long run, but passage by passage: one text, unhurried, asking the Holy Spirit for understanding. Whoever tries to swallow everything at once loses the overview. Whoever takes one passage each day will see the whole picture over time.

The connection

In the Old Testament, simple obedience to God's word leads to cleansing and healing from an incurable disease. In the New Testament, Jesus overcomes the news of death with a single word, calls for faith, and prepares for a resurrection that goes beyond any healing.

Reflection

Yesterday, we saw how humility and faith open the door to healing. Today, we take it a step further: it is simple, sometimes unspectacular, obedience that enables God's work. Naaman didn't have to wash in a magnificent river, but in the Jordan – a river he might even have despised. Yet, it was precisely this simple act of obedience that led to his complete healing.

And then, the news of the synagogue ruler's daughter's death. A final, seemingly unalterable fact. But Jesus says, 'Be not afraid, only believe!' He doesn't trivialise death, but He opposes it with a greater power: faith. Where we see an end, He sees a new possibility, a 'sleeping' instead of an irreversible 'being dead'.

What does this mean for you today? Perhaps you are facing a situation that seems hopeless, or you hesitate to take a small, unassuming step of obedience. Remember: sometimes it is precisely simple, humble obedience that paves the way for God's miracles. And even when all seems lost, Jesus invites you not to fear, but to believe. His word has the power to turn the seemingly impossible.

Prayer

Dear Father in heaven, I thank You for the wonders You work throughout history and even today. Sometimes it's hard for me to trust Your word, especially when circumstances seem hopeless. Help me today to practise obedience, even in the small things, and to believe where I only see an end. Grant me the courage not to fear, but to trust firmly in You, for Your word has the power to heal and to awaken to life. Amen.

The thread

We are deep into our weekly theme of 'Miracles and Mercy'. Yesterday focused on humility and faith as keys to healing. Today, we see how simple obedience leads to cleansing and how Jesus's word transforms death into sleep, already hinting at resurrection. Next week, we will look at the prodigal son and God's unconditional love.

Today, trust in God's word – it has the power to heal and to awaken to life.
