God's Glory and the Gift of Life

Christ Comes · Miracles and Mercy
Old Testament
2 Kings 5:15-16
«And he returned to the man of God, he and all his company, and came and stood before him, and said, Behold now, I know that there is no God in all the earth, but in Israel: now therefore, I pray thee, take a blessing of thy servant. But he said, As the Lord liveth, before whom I stand, I will receive none. And he urged him to take it; but he refused.»
New Testament
Mark 5:40-43
«And they laughed him to scorn. But when he had put them all out, he taketh the father and the mother of the damsel, and them that were with him, and entereth in where the damsel was lying. And he took the damsel by the hand, and said unto her, Talitha cumi; which is, being interpreted, Damsel, I say unto thee, arise. And straightway the damsel arose, and walked; for she was of the age of twelve years. And they were astonished with a great astonishment. And he charged them straitly that no man should know it; and commanded that something should be given her to eat.»

Promise and fulfilment

Foretold

The announcement in the Old Testament was that God alone is the true God, who grants healing and life, and that His grace cannot be bought.

Fulfilled

In Jesus Christ, this truth is perfectly realised as He not only heals but raises the dead, thereby demonstrating absolute authority over life and death, without demanding anything in return.

Let these verses remind you to take your own Bible in your hands, read them there again and, if you wish, continue a little further. Holding God's Word in your hands also gives you a precious moment away from the digital world.

Do not read the Bible in one long run, but passage by passage: one text, unhurried, asking the Holy Spirit for understanding. Whoever tries to swallow everything at once loses the overview. Whoever takes one passage each day will see the whole picture over time.

The connection

In the Old Testament, people recognise God's greatness and mercy through healing and wish to express their gratitude. Yet, God Himself is the greatest gift. In Jesus Christ, this gift becomes tangible: He not only brings healing but restores life itself, freely given out of pure love, without expectation of repayment.

Reflection

Yesterday, we saw how obedience and faith lead to life. Today, we delve into recognising God's gift of life in its fullness. Naaman, the Syrian, after his healing, acknowledges that the God of Israel is the only true God. He wants to reward Elisha, but Elisha refuses. God's grace is beyond price; it is a pure gift.

In Jesus, we see this priceless grace in an even profounder way. He enters the house where death reigns and casts out the mockers. He takes the dead girl by the hand and speaks a life-creating word: 'Damsel, I say unto thee, arise!' And she stands up. It is a demonstration of His divine power over death, a foretaste of the resurrection that awaits us all.

What a comfort to know that our God not only heals but creates life! He touches the unclean, the dead, and makes it whole and alive. This miracle isn't just for Naaman or the girl. It is for you. It is the assurance that God has the power to awaken new life even in the darkest corners of your existence. Let this truth touch you today.

Prayer

Dear God, I marvel at Your immeasurable power and boundless goodness. You are the only true God, who gives life where death reigns. Thank You for loving me and for Your grace, which is beyond price. Help me to feel Your presence today and to recognise how You touch the unclean in my life and bring it to life. I entrust my heart and my day to You. Amen.

The thread

We are in the week of miracles and mercy. Yesterday focused on obedience and faith, which heal and bring to life. Today, we see the full glory of God, who not only heals but conquers death and gives life, and how we respond to this gift.
