The Light Shines in the Darkness
«The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined.»
«In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.»
Let these verses remind you to take your own Bible in your hands, read them there again and, if you wish, continue a little further. Holding God's Word in your hands also gives you a precious moment away from the digital world.
Do not read the Bible in one long run, but passage by passage: one text, unhurried, asking the Holy Spirit for understanding. Whoever tries to swallow everything at once loses the overview. Whoever takes one passage each day will see the whole picture over time.
The connection
What Isaiah spoke as a prophetic promise for a people in shadow becomes a reality for all humanity in Jesus Christ. He is not merely a light that shines, but life itself, penetrating and overcoming the darkness. Where the Old Covenant held out hope for a future event, in Christ, the light has already appeared and is unconquerable.
Reflection
Yesterday, we considered how God prepared the way for His light. Today, that light shines forth. Imagine yourself in a pitch-black room, and suddenly, a beam of light breaks through. Not just a faint glimmer, but a great, bright light that pierces the darkness and gives you orientation.
The world around us can sometimes feel like a land in the shadow of death – full of uncertainty, fear, and worry. Isaiah speaks of a people walking there. Perhaps you, too, sometimes feel as if you are fumbling in the dark, searching for a way out or a clear direction.
Yet, John proclaims that in Jesus, this light has not only come, but it is life itself. The darkness has no power over it; it cannot extinguish it. This light is not merely present; it is active and alive. It invites you today to consciously step into its brightness and allow it to guide you, wherever you may find yourself.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I thank You for this new light that has come into the world with Jesus. I acknowledge that sometimes I walk in darkness, uncertain and searching. I pray that Your light – life itself – may shine in me and through me today. Drive away the shadows of fear and worry, and fill me with Your clarity and peace. Help me to receive Your light and to carry it into a world that so desperately needs it. Amen.
