The Word Becomes Flesh and Dwells Among Us
«For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.»
«And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.»
Let these verses remind you to take your own Bible in your hands, read them there again and, if you wish, continue a little further. Holding God's Word in your hands also gives you a precious moment away from the digital world.
Do not read the Bible in one long run, but passage by passage: one text, unhurried, asking the Holy Spirit for understanding. Whoever tries to swallow everything at once loses the overview. Whoever takes one passage each day will see the whole picture over time.
The connection
What Isaiah announced as a prophetic promise of a future ruler and Prince of Peace finds its fulfilment in Jesus Christ. He is this child, this son, who bears the government not just on his shoulder, but in his entire being. John reveals that this Prince of Peace is none other than the eternal Word of God, who became human to live among us and show us the Father's glory.
Reflection
Yesterday, we received the peace of the Prince of Peace, who lies in the manger. Today, we look deeper: Who is this child, this gift given to us? Isaiah bestows upon him names that fill us with wonder: Wonderful Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father. These titles transcend human measure and point towards something divine.
John takes up this thought and makes it even more concrete. He declares that the eternal Word of God, who was with God and was God, became flesh. Imagine that: The incomprehensible, the eternal, the source of all being – becomes a human being. He dwells among us, lives our daily lives, experiences our joys and sorrows. The glory of God becomes tangible, visible in a person.
This is the incredible truth of Christmas: God does not come as a distant ruler, but as one of us. He shares our life, so that we might share His life. This closeness, this connection, is a gift that forever changes our understanding of God. It is an invitation to see Him not merely as a mighty God, but as the one who is closer to us than any other.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I thank You for this unfathomable gift. You sent Your eternal Word, who became flesh and dwelt among us. Thank You for not remaining distant, but for becoming human to be near to us. Help me today truly grasp the depth of this truth and carry it in my heart. Let me recognise Your glory, which came to us in grace and truth, and allow Your love to permeate me. Amen.
