The Government Shall Be Upon His Shoulder
«For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.»
«And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.»

Do not read the Bible in one long run, but passage by passage: one text, unhurried, asking the Holy Spirit for understanding. Whoever tries to swallow everything at once loses the overview. Whoever takes one passage each day will see the whole picture over time.
The connection
Isaiah prophesies the birth of a child upon whose shoulder the government shall rest – an image of responsibility and authority. Christ fulfils this prophecy by declaring, after His resurrection, that all power in heaven and on earth has been given to Him. What begins in the Old Testament as the promise of a future ruler becomes, in Jesus, the lived reality of comprehensive and loving authority.
Reflection
Yesterday, we welcomed the Prince of Peace into our hearts. Today, we contemplate the vastness of His dominion. Isaiah foresaw that the burden of responsibility, the power of governance, would rest upon the shoulders of this child. It's an image that reminds us of a king who carries his people, who cares for them and leads them. Yet, this King is different; He is no tyrant, but the Prince of Peace.
And then we hear Jesus Himself declare: 'All power is given unto me.' This is no empty claim, but the truth of the resurrected Christ. He is not merely a King seated on a throne, but one who actively works in heaven and on earth. This power is not meant to oppress us, but to redeem us, to heal us, and to lead us into His love. It is a power demonstrated through service and self-giving.
What does it mean for you that the government is upon His shoulder and all power is given to Him? It means you are not alone with your burdens and worries. You may entrust them to Him, for He is the one who has the power to bear all things and transform them. Let this certainty carry and guide you today. He is the Lord – and He is good.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, I thank You that You are the prophesied Ruler, to whom all power is given in heaven and on earth. Your reign is not threatening, but a reign of love and peace. Today, I lay my burdens and worries upon Your shoulders, for You are strong enough to bear them. Guide me with Your wisdom and strengthen me through Your presence. May Your will be done in my life and through me in this world. Amen.
